Rachel Albright of Richmond based jewelry line Academy Jewelry was so sweet to
take the time to allow me to pick her brain a little bit about life, her
inspiration and some of her favorite things. Her designs are
inspired by a love of visual art, an interest in fashion and a desire to combine the two. All pieces are made entirely by hand and are a one-of-a-kind venture in art meeting accessory.
Where do you live? Where did you grow up? I live in Richmond, Virginia, and I grew up in a small rural town outside of Richmond.
Zodiac sign? Pisces
Where do you find inspiration? Almost always from art, mostly sculpture and installation.
What's hot right now? Literally - the scalding coffee I spilled on myself.
Describe your style? Weird pants, cropped jackets, baggy tees. Oh, I'm also getting into wearing hats.
You
always have perfectly messy hair that looks amazing.
What are your secrets? Ha - it's easy! Less
washing, less combing. I use dry shampoo and mess it up with my hands. I
don't have the patience for a hairbrush.
What's
on heavy rotation in your wardrobe currently? A baggy white tee a
friend made, jeans that are very close to falling apart, clunky ankle
boots, messy hair - a very easy uniform for a very rainy week.
What
was the most fashionable thing you last bought? Amazing marbled silk
pants from my friend Ilana Kohn - baggy and drop-crotch, just the way I
like them.
What's on your style wishlist? The perfect matching blazer and pants (or shorts) suit - maybe red.
Who are your favorite designers? I have so many - but Brook&Lyn is at the top of the list. Mimi can do anything.
What's your ideal day? Coffee, quiet studio time, loud friend time, maybe some beers, definitely some tacos.
5
things you can't live without? Coffee, Rachel Comey Penpal boots (the
most perfect), Peep (the coolest cat in the universe), Amanda
Weatherford, tacos.
If you could tell us one thing what would it be? Floss.
What does the future hold? Very big things, of course.
